Name Origin: The dome of Stone Mountain formed during the formation of the Blue Ridge Mountains around 300–350 million years ago during the Carboniferous period, the result of upwelling magma that solidified into granite five to ten miles below the surface. Stone Mountain Manor The mountain takes its name simply from its most defining physical characteristic — a massive, bare granite dome rising dramatically above the Georgia Piedmont.
